Eureka & new innovation at CES 2013 – part 2

January 2013 - The main convention center at LVCC is filled with establish companies with well known product lines. The new expansion at the Venetian hotel and the upper floor exhibit areas featured smaller and emerging companies that were bringing out new technology for the first time or as prototypes to the CES show. Some of the exciting companies that had products to show are summarized below in no particular order.

Rockstor was showing some of thier portable high security drives. Designed with the specifications of the enterprise market, these secure external drives have physical security in that they cannot be opened and removed from their enclosures, and also data security. Some of the models shown incorporated SED drives that are Opal compliant and also used 2 factor authentication with an on drive keypad for PIN entry. These drives use a USB 2.0 interface and the in case controller uses SATA2 with AES256 CBC encryption. They also showed models with a USB3 interface with a built in power supply, USB charging capability, optional eSATA interface and FW800. All use AES256 CBC encryption. The devices are available in capacities from 512GB to 4TB depending on model, most are 1TB-2TB.

Polaroid Z2300B zero ink printing camera

Polaroid was making a resurgence on the instant photo market with a digital camera with an instant printer that creates hardcopy photos in the camera in a format that is reminiscent of the original Polaroid film cameras. The new units also have a self cleaning and adjustment system so each pack of printing paper is kept there are clean and crisp images on the printouts. The technology is zink for zero ink printing.  The initial model is a 10MP camera available in black and white body colors.

Huawei was showing thier shift from the ODM model to the OEM model with thier new smart phones the Ascend Mate and the Ascend D2. These two units feature Android, a very large screen, a superior camera, and a large battery. Designed for multi-tasking, the device has large memory and is designed with a floating windows GUI and one hand dialing.

Syntella (http://www.syntellia.com) was showing an innovative touch typing correction system for mobile devices. On both tablets and phone along with Android and iOS, their predictive typing software was able to correctly deterine the letters thatt were being soufht on an entry basis, even if the typing was not on the virtual keyboard on the screen. The units was demonstration by one of theri testers who was a blind individual who over the course of the demo was able to sms text a free form discussion to a foreign phone including dialing the number. Of the typing systems being shown at CES, this one was the best and actually works. Great for those with sight and motor control issues should investigate this product as it was a definite must look for the market.


Oh Mi Bod Wireless Vibrator

OhMiBod was showing a series of USB chargeable wireless female demographic personal haptic devices. The new series is waterproof and features a custom app for iPod and iPad interface to help build your favorite patterns from your existing music library. These can then be downloaded into the vibrator via wireless interface (wifi and now bluetooth). The software has a simplified crossover control that separates the rhythm section of the music (bass, drums, etc) from the melody and converts the intensity of the sounds into vibration patterns. The wireless transmitter connects to the iDevices via a 3.5mm miniplug. The products are also available in a “club” version with a remote control for automated programming of the units. These are available now with MSPRs of <$100.

 Finally entering the consumer market was In2uit brought an electrostatic speaker unit to the desktop wireless (bluetooth) mobile device speaker market. Once the exclusive arena of high priced Pro-Audio speakers, electrostatic speakers are a very thin planar design, high brightness, high clarity speaker. They are typically supplemented by a normal conical speaker for the low end bass sound. The products from In2uit are available in several styles - wall mount, desk top, and table top units. They were in the process of looking to release a Qi charging product but it had not been tested as yet.
